Research Project
As a bioinformatics intern, my primary project is the development
of an in-house program for interfacing with dbZach’s microarray
subsystem. The goal of this project is to allow lab members
to upload their microarray experiment data such as TIFF images,
raw data, and results from statistical analysis onto dbZach.
In addition, the program will allow users to query information
from previous microarray experiments that are stored in the
database. It is designed such that users can perform these tasks
via the user interface or an input file for batch submission.
The project is developed with IBM Websphere, employing various
Java technologies including JDBC for interactions with the Oracle9i
database and Swing for GUI design. On the database side, I have
created the corresponding SQL packages to perform insertions
and queries.
Aside from the Java project, I am also responsible for preparing
reports for grant proposals, performing various Windows network
administrative tasks, and maintaining the Zacharewski Lab website.
I am also learning about various bioinformatics related topics,
such as sequence database program Blast and Perl Scripting,
under the guidance of grad students Lyle
Burgoon and Ed Dere.
