Bioinformatics Experience at Zacharewski Laboratory
I am involved in various projects that fall in two categories
namely wet-lab projects and bioinformatics projects in the Zacharewski
Laboratory.
In the wet-lab side of projects I have performed PCR-amplifications.
After performing a PCR-amplification, a gel was ran to verify
the PCR-amplification results. As soon as that checked out I
performed filteration and then re-suspension of the PCR-amplified
product.
I am being trained for the wet-lab tasks by Cora
Fong and Darrell Boverhof.
As a Bioinformatics Co-op student I am involved in building
various database visualization tools. I primarly program in
Java building tools that query the dbZach database. My first
Java project involved building a user-friendly interface that
allowed users to input single or multiple text files containing
the query fields and then retrieve the requested fields from
the Genes Subsystem of the dbZach database in text or excel
format. Another project involved packaging connectDB package,
a package written in Java. At present Shraddha
and myself are performing the role of a Java architect in designing
a dbZach API which will be a collection of the Java interfaces,
abstract classes and concrete classes build by our lab members
to allow interaction with the dbZach database. I am also working
on a Java Microarray Feature Inspection Tool which will allow
end users to interact with the Microarray Subsystem of the dbZach
database and gather information pertaining to requested Microarray
features through a user-friendly environment.
In addition to the Java projects, I also perform general Oracle
DBA and windows network administration tasks.
I am working with Lyle Burgoon
and Yan Sun on the Bioinformatics
Projects.
