Research Project

As an undergraduate lab assistant in the Zacharewski Lab, I work primarily with graduate student Joshua Kwekel. I am currently working on clone amplification for spotted-cDNA microarrays generated in the lab. Most of my work consists of high-throughput PCR amplification of both rat and mouse clones, and gel electrophoresis confirmation of clone identity. I am also learning about microarrays as a tool for gene expression profiling as well as real-time PCR confirmation of interesting genes. I’ve assisted in RNA isolation and quantification from whole tissues in preparation for microarray and real-time experiments.

I have some experience in cell culture work and I am planning to work on a project to identify the functionality of estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) in the H4IIE (rat hepatoma) cell line (a potential in vitro model for the lab). I will use real-time PCR analysis of E2 responsive genes to determine if H4IIE’s contain a functional ERa.
