Your education as a graduate student is important to us.
Graduate school presents a unique opportunity to develop your scientific potential.
As a graduate student in our department, you will develop the skills needed to
participate fully in exciting areas of contemporary scientific research. Specifically,
our program is designed to
- teach you contemporary methods in biochemistry
- provide you a broad background of theoretical knowledge in many disciplines
- give you training in planning, carrying out, and interpreting experiments
- develop critical thinking skills in analyzing the scientific literature
- provide you with the skills needed for effective oral communication
- teach you the art of grant and proposal writing
- provide opportunities to interact with and learn from your colleagues at conferences
- educate you about the variety of career options available to highly trained professionals
We accomplish these goals by providing
- Direct one-on-one mentoring by your research advisor - that's why we're here!
- Comprehensive course-work and diverse departmental
colloquium series.
- Journal
clubs on a variety of topics - Transcription Journal Club and BM&B
Research Presentations.
- Writing workshops - Currently, three graduate students are meeting with me weekly to
practice scientific writing. We work on manuscripts, proposals and essays focused on the
students' research area.
- Practice in oral presentations - every group meeting and journal club is an opportunity for you
to improve your effectiveness as a speaker. This practice will be useful when you present
research at conferences, give job seminars, and learn how to teach.
- Career advice and placement (career
day).
- Attendance at scientific retreats and scientific meetings.
- Teaching experience in biochemistry.
- Opportunities to mentor younger students and undergraduates.
- Collaborative opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
Graduate training is a rewarding experience and the first
step to a scientific career. This path provides opportunities for personal independence,
growth, and accomplishment that are found in few other vocations.
