Pauly Lab Members

Postdoctoral Associates

Marcin Nowicki joined the Pauly Lab in September 2006, directly after defending his PhD in Plant Lipid Biochemistry at the Technical University of Aachen (Germany). His MSc research performed at the Warsaw Agricultural University (Poland; graduated 2002) focused on biochemical characterization of nitrogen-assimilating machinery. At the same time he was part-time working for Astra-Zeneca Poland. Before graduation, Marcin completed extensive Molecular Biology training during two-semester exchange program in Dr. K.Kondo's group at the Hiroshima University (Japan). The currently pursued projects deal with nuclotide-sugar network / pectin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis, tobacco, and tomato. Email: marcin@msu.edu

Visiting Scholars

Sascha Gille
is a Visiting Scholar from University of Potsdam, Germany working towards his PhD degree in the Pauly lab. Sascha got his Masters degree in Biology from Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany in 2004. Before he joined Markus Pauly’s lab in 2006, Sascha worked as a scientific consultant at TIB MolBiol GmbH in Berlin. Currently he is working on the identification and characterization of novel Arabidopsis thaliana cell wall mutants affected in the xyloglucan structure.

Markus Gunl
is interested in the biochemical and molecular biological characterization of xyloglucan mutants. In particular he makes use of a method that combines an analytical digest of xyloglucan followed by mass spectrometrical analysis of the released oligosaccharides. He graduated in 2006 from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, with Masters degree in Biological Sciences. Before he joined the Pauly Lab in 2007 as a Visiting Scholar, he held a Marie-Curie Fellowship at INRA in Versailles, France.

Florian Kraemer
is a visiting scholar from the University of Potsdam, Germany and a member of the Pauly lab since 2007. He is a Master student currently working on the phenotypic and genetic characterization of an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant with an altered xyloglucan structure. Using the OLIMP method (oligosaccharide mass profiling) he was able to map base clone the responsible gene which is involved in xyloglucan degradation. After completion of his Master thesis he will continue as a PhD student working on Brachypodium distachyon. This project will aim at identifying genes involved in hemicellulose biosynthesis/degradation. To achieve that he will screen a fast neutron mutagenized population via monosugar composition to find plants with alterations in hemicelluloses. These will then be further analyzed by gene mapping and phenotypical characterization. Even outside the lab he enjoys cooking as well as cycling and badminton. He is also an avid Spartans Basketball and Football fan and despite being German, he doesn't like beer.

Nino Nikolovski
joined our lab in 2005 as a visiting scholar from the University of Potsdam, Germany. Nino got his Master’s degree in Biology from Kazan State University, Russia. He did his diploma in Kazan Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, working on genes involved in fiber cell wall formation and ever since has been interested in plant cell wall research. In our lab he is working towards screening and identification of Arabidopsis mutants affected in pectin structure and linking these changes to certain physiological functions. His research interests cover cell wall dynamics during cell elongation and role of pectin in these processes. E-mail: ninovski@msu.edu

Undergraduate Students

Greg Fedewa is a junior in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.  He is currently researching novel cell adhesion pectin mutants; work that was started by Nino Nikolovski.  He plans on graduation in spring 2009 and then continuing to graduate school.

Lewis Messner is involved in the analysis of cell wall mutant lines using a combination of different tools. In spring 2007 he graduated from the Lansing Community College with an Associate Degree. Soon thereafter he joined the MSU Environmental Biology / Plant Biology program. In fall 2007 he started to work with Markus Gunl in the Pauly Lab. E-mail: messner8@msu.edu
Jennifer Sprunger is a junior Biochemistry major at MSU. She is working with Nino Nikolovski on the pectin analytical platform for Arabidopsis mutants. She is graduating in 2010.
E-mail: sprunge3@msu.edu
Carmen Tracey is a MSU senior with a major in General Horticulture. Carmen is working together with Sascha Gille on the identification and characterization of new xyloglucan mutants. Carmen will graduate in Fall 2009. Email: traceym1@msu.edu
